Introducing the Swiss Maturité
TheSwiss Maturité exam (formerly the Maturité fédérale exam), organized by SEFRI, leads to the Swiss Maturité diploma, the certificate of completion of secondary education in an academic program.
Historically, the Swiss Matura (maturité fédérale) was the first Matura diploma offered in Switzerland – excluding the cantonal Matura – and today it is one of the three pillars of the Swiss school system. (with vocational and specialized matriculation) that lead to higher education. In general terms, the Swiss Maturité attests to a high level of knowledge acquired during your years at the Institut-domi. It is recognized throughout Switzerland and abroad.
Unlike the cantonal Matura, which is spread over three, four or five years, depending on the canton, the Swiss Matura is more direct. It consists of an examination divided into two parts, each with six subjects: biology, chemistry, physics, visual arts, history and geography.
Mathematics, languages (French, German, Italian or English), options (specific and complementary) and mature work make up the 2nd part. All the dates of the Swiss Maturité exams can be found on this link: Official Matura exam dates
The program, based on Swiss Maturité guidelines, is broken down into modules and followed via our e-learning platform. Thanks to theInstitut-domi, As a distance learning school, you have complete control over your homework, study time and location, as well as your timetable. The latter can be worked out with the director, Mr. Sola, if you feel the need.
Swiss Maturité disciplines
There are twelve disciplines in the maturité suisse curriculum, plus a diploma paper.
You will have seven basic disciplines (mandatory), a specific option (your choice) and one additional option (your choice). You complete your curriculum with the maturity work.
Fundamental disciplines
These are the disciplines on which the student will be tested;
they are composed as follows:
(1st partial)
- Biology
- Chemistry
- Physics
- Geography
- History
- Visual arts
(2nd part)
- French
- Second national language:
German or Italian - Third foreign language:

(One branch to choose from)
- A modern language (Italian or Spanish)
- Biology and chemistry
- Economics and law
- Psychology/pedagogy/philosophy
Maturity work
A personal research paper of 4,000 words (approx. 15 pages) is required,
. Depending on the subject and the problem, a tutorial system with the Institut-domi trainer will follow you along the way. The diploma paper is based on one of the subjects studied during the course. It must be handed in when you register for the second part of the exams. However, you should have completed it at least one month beforehand, so that the management can correct it and give you feedback.
Complementary options (OC)
Is an option in a discipline that interests you. Generally
less advanced than the OS. The OS is chosen from the following disciplines.
(One branch to choose from)
- Geography
- Economics and law
- Psychology/Pedagogy
- Philosophy
Job opportunities
The Maturité is a diploma recognized not only in Switzerland, but also abroad, and is the final certificate awarded on completion of your secondary education. It is a key qualification for further study. A Swiss Matura diploma gives you direct access to all university faculties in Switzerland, regardless of the type of course you choose and without an entrance exam, as well as to the Hautes Ecoles Spécialisées (HES), Ecole Spécialisée (ES)…
There are two types of Maturité, of almost equal value but differing in difficulty:
State schools prepare the gymnasial (or cantonal) Maturité, while private schools prepare the maturité suisse. The examination is organized by the SEFRI (State Secretariat for Education, Research and Innovation) under the responsibility of the Swiss Matura Commission (CSM).
Not only is the Swiss Maturité federal – i.e. with equal objectives – it is also more demanding. This gives students an advantage, as the next stage of their studies begins only two weeks after the end of the exams.
The best and quickest way to continue your academic studies is to obtain your Swiss Maturité!
